Nowai not allowed to happen!

Post by Soraya »

First, I am sorry for my DCs tonight, but they weren't DCs, they were total PC shut down (without reboot). I had this issue back in December and (maybe coincidentally) my manual reboot at that time interrupted a Windows update - updated Windows no further issues. Until tonight, and only when in raid (incidentally the December shut downs only happened in raid and later a M+).

Ok, pc specialists, I will cook you breakfast if you can help! Or I will cook Ro breakfast if she makes you help! :D

I ran a utility to check temperature and all well below max. I updated GFX drivers. The last Windows update was successfully installed on 12 December (when issues started) no further updates available.

Soooo, um, spec! It is two years old. It cost me £1.8K

Windows 10 Home x64
NVidia MSI GTX 980TI 6GB
Gigabyte X99-UD5 Ultra MB
2 x 8 GB Hyper X Fury 2666Mhz Ram
Intel i7 5820k 3.3Ghz (umm 12 of them core thingies??)
5 casing fans + a big BeQuiet Dark Rock CPU Cooler (PC runs totally silent, does what it says on the box). I have 3 speed manual fan speed control and have ever needed to up it past 1.
C drive is a Crucial MX200 SSD (WoW installed here)
Second HDD Seagate 1TB SATAIII 64MB 6GBS
Corsair VS650W PSU

(I mention the PSU because I am suspicious by previous experience that this may be at fault?)

What else can I tell you that might help? I believe this pc has a limited 3 year warranty but I am raiding tomorrow, hence I am more limited than my warranty!! :D

What might be interesting to add is that my in game whispers have not updated at all tonight...I still get spammed by last night's conversations when I log in..it must be an age thing?

Loving you in advance! :)

I am a nerd but not nerdy enough for this.

I would run system tests in the bios.
Thats hardware, testing.
just to find anything.

I don;t like it you have this problem. Let's see if there is better nerds.

Hmm not sure I have any more knowledge than you on the subject :? So did the PC suddenly just cut out as though the power died? That would lead my thinking towards hardware issues.
Have you moved the PC around recently? I've had problems in the past with loose connections to the motherboard causing the power to trip. Also if the internals are very dusty that can cause similar issues, I think.

Fingers crossed one of our boffins can help! :D

Mmm breakfast! So here are my non-expert thoughts. Making the assumption that the PC straight up powers itself off (rather than locks up so nothing works and you have to restart it, a problem I had last month which was fixed with latest video drivers for my AMD card).

It's likely a heat or power issue, so my suggestions would be:
  • Given you had a history of update problems I would try an unlikely to help but simple thing: restart within Windows (rather than a shut down then manual start) to avoid a problem with Fast Start-up meaning you never get a proper shut down.
  • Check Windows updates doesn't find any, and graphics drivers are up-to-date.
  • Open the case and see if it is significantly dusty. If so get a can of compressed air from somewhere like Currys PC World and blow dust off components so heat can escape.
  • Next would be trying the first three items at this SuperUser link (noting any changed settings carefully, changing it, seeing if the problem recurs before putting the setting back and moving to the next).
  • Check Event Viewer > Windows Log > System for any interesting events (to find when it happened on the reboot the log will probably have Critical event ID 41 "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.").
  • Turn off any over-clocking.
  • Directly check temperatures the CPU is reaching e.g. in BIOS (find a decent guide). Turn up the manual fan to max. Perhaps run with the case off (this is not supposed to be logical but has worked for me in the past).
  • Hit it increasingly hard with a sledgehammer, until it either works or it is obvious that you need a new one.

Nice points guys. I specially like Elihm's last one. I truly hope that it will cause either the computer will giggle awake or have Sora put it besides that thing to scare it a bit.

Having said that.
I'll check my pc tomorrow for the name, but I have a little bit of software on it for driver updating, once advised to use by a IT techy.
It has a free trial function that is quite extensive and the driver database behind it it *MASSIVE*. Also the driver updates have been without any incident in the last year and a half, including 2 vid driver updates per month.

Just in case you want to have your drivers for your chipsets(chipset drivers be importanté!) and secondary parts checked also.

Sounds like a PSU problem to me, hardware problems often result in a BSOD(Blue screen) first.
Corsair is considered a lower tier brand im afraid, overclockers probably avoid it.
And ive come across 700W minimum for your card, given youve used the PSU for quite a while it might just start to give up.

So what im thinking is that the PSU is done powering your really good GPU, and if im right you should get a new PSU asap to prevent damaging your card.

Yep probably some sort of hardware failing. Maybe best to stress test your pc to see if it's a high temp failure or other hardware failure.

Best to test with Aida64 Extreme edition. https://www.aida64.com/downloads to stress test your CPU.

Goto utilities -> System stability test. Keep it running for at least an hour and check the temperatures.

Then stresstest your GPU with MSI Kombustor http://www.geeks3d.com/20140917/msi-kom ... benchmark/

If both alone work fine, best to let them both run at the same time. If you need any more help don't hesitate to message.

These days my understanding of PC issues is abysmal, sorry, so stick with what these guys say.

Not sure if you're getting the same thing as me. Often when I first log in to the BN app I get an alert that there are unread messages for me, which, on checking, I had already read. Either way, I don't think you should be distracted by this.

Some of what you state sounds similar to my experience last year. At first it was mostly OK until I logged into Wow when after a short time (which as things progressed became just a few seconds) caused not just WoW to freeze but eventually the whole PC. Sadly, I can't help identify the cause (except I believe it was almost certainly hardware). I took the view that the since it was around 4-5 years old, it was best to get a new one.

So, sorry I can't help. :( Hopefully you can get it fixed soon,

I’ve had a similar issue recently. First, my hard drive was practically full, that was messing with patches getting applied and causing crashes.

Then my ssd started to die. Random pc deaths until I replaced that.

Strongly suggest you take a look at the hard drive and any pairings if you have dual boot shenanigans!
