Inspiration/meanings of your characters names ....

Post by Mehetabel »

I love knowing what inspired people to name their characters what they did ... some people aren't too bothered and choose the first thing they think of, others (like me) spend hours thinking and deciding!

Anyway, 'cause I'm really bored at work and have nothing else to do, here are all my alts and their names and meanings!

Mehetabel (holly pally) - means "favoured by God" or "makes God happy" in Hebrew, a name I thought was well suited to a holy warrior

Wolfdreamer (hunter) - this is actually my name .... kinda. For years I had an Native American "pen friend". She and her friends consequently invited me to join many of their online forums and groups but more than that, they welcomed me there which was rare for an "outsider". After a year or so, knowing that I had a deep interest in NA history, legend and customs, they gave me my own NA name - Wolfdreamer. I felt deeply honoured then, and still do now. :D One of my WoW characters therefore had to have the name too!

Adorabelle (mage) - no deep meaning for this one, she is draenai and has pigtails ... what else could I possibly have called her?

Cheetara (druid) - I'm a huge Thundercats fan and she can change into a cat .... seemed the perfect name!

Starsong (shaman) - I wanted something Native American-like for her, as well as something that seemed very magical.

Icewolf (my future DK) - the name I originally wanted for my DK is taken so I'm going with this one which sounds a bit NA but also cold and dangerous - plus suits the whole Northrend theme of ice and snow!

Horde

Starmist (hunter) - belf hunter with red hair ...... seemed to suit a belf's magical background.

Silvermoo (shaman) - she's a cow and she's white! But actually I was trying to get Silvermoon but it was taken and I had a sudden idea to drop the "n" off the end!

Fagan - Couldn't get the proper spelling (Should be Fagin) But named after the notorious thief from Charles Dickens 'Oliver Twist' - Perfect name for a Rogue imho "Goooooot ta pick a pocket or tooooo!"

Pannthro (lvl 68 Pally tank)- Thundercats theme same as Mehe, (couldn't get Panthro) He's big, grey/blue, bald, an engineer and a tank to match the character.

Jaga (lvl 12 Druid)- Thundercats again! He's old looking and a druid, so suits the Thundercat again (Jaga was the old spirit)

Mummraa (Undead lvl 17 Shadow Priest) - Guess where that came from!

Deathjester (Will be a Death Knight) - Named after the heavy weapon specialists of the Harlequins - part of the race of Eldar in Warhammer 40k.

p.s. Mehe shouldn't you be doing some work! Get moving! :P

Pay off wizard is a poker term that was created/made famous by two of my favourite poker players, Phil Laak and Antonio Esfandiari.

I enjoy creating names that are not related to sci-fi lore sometimes. For one thing, I am the only Payoffwizard on the EU server.

Giruy = Little know latin phrase meaning 'What a great guy, give him some glod'.

Healander = Little know Greek phrase meaning 'What a great guy, give him some glod'.

Lairyfiquid = Little know Russian phrase meaning 'What a great guy, give him some glod'.

;)

Giruy = Scottish acronym 'get it right up ye'.

Healander = Play on words from highlander (seeing as I'm scottish) and healer.

Lairyfiquid = Spoonerism of a well know washing up liquid, pets called 'Dishes' :D

nice topic Mehe :)

my character's name is actually pretty obvious actually;
Passepartout; a character in Jules Verne's novel, Around the World in Eighty Days. He is the French valet to the novel's English protagonist, Phileas Fogg.

"Wolfdreamer".

You really should read this series of books then!

Oh and my char names are impossible to explain (Desi, Soilfish and Shoefish): Desi is a name me and friends gave a cult-like status. Really, it's impossible to explain. It originates from Desi Bouterse, allthough I'm not proud to admit that.
I really like the word "fish". It's a shame "Fish of the People" didn't fit in the name field. "Soil" and "Shoe" go together well with "fish" imho. :P

Erianuiome was my second D&D char, probably rolled about 1980. The DM could never spell it, so it got shortened.
Start every day off with a smile and get it over with.

Somewhat similar to Erian.

I was a GM/DM in a roleplayinggame I developed loosely based on AD&D. I have books filled with maps, immagined flora and fauna and NPC names and storylines at home. Cilithan was an NPC in a story about a priestorder worshipping a Hunterdeity named Corvahl. Cilithan was more or less the Archbishop of that Deity, and a master Huntsman as such. Actually Kelder Milenz was also a warrior NPC in this roleplayinggame, a particularly fierce one who was able to wield a towershield in one hand and use a polearm singlehandedly in the other :) .

Cilithan has after that allways been my PC name in various computergames, also it was the name of my Farseer-commander in the Nurgle themed Iyanden army I made (Wh40k). An other often used PC name is Tra-Bor who has a similar background.

Sylchria is going to be my DeathKnight, he's also form the Tomes of Mara (roleplaying game I mentioned), as are Blaauw (my current pet) and Traell and Zissht (my other pets). I have a lvl 12 warrior alt named Losa, which is also an NPC from said game.

I have so many NPC names with matching backgrounds and classes listed, that I'll never have to invent a name again in my life for these kinds of games :)

Cilithan

Oh btw, Ive allways pronounced my name as Kilithan (not that I mind Silithan - to which Ive gotten used to as well :) )

I wanted a name suited to a tank. But tank was allready taken. After wandering a bit along the lines of Solid, Shield and other crappy ideas I decided Base might be nice, as in a tank is the base of a group. When I found this link I was sold on the name. "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US" and I used the first pic in that link as avatar for a while on the forums.

My Shaman, Abase, was simply another one of my incredibly creative sprouts when I decided to make a Base that could heal. When My hunter was made I decided to make yet another awesome name, Abasa since I figured it was a bit more creative than aBase2 and it sounded more like a girl name with the a at the end (Female NE).

My rogue was actually created early on this server (before my Shaman after the warrior I think). I thought Rebel was a decent name for a rogue but since it was taken I decided to make it sound like a Girls name (Female Human) by adding that awesome a after the name (see the theme here?).

I'll save you from naming all my other lower level alts which were created before between or after these toons, but rest assured you are not missing out on anything great and creative.... Maybe I should bugg Cilithan for a DK name to prevent it becoming Dkbase or something equally inspired....
